What's in a name?

Lucie:  "Mom, I wrote my name on my homework page."
Mom:  "Great."  (What's the big deal?  She's been doing this for a loooong time?)
Lucie:  "Mom, come and see."

Where does she come up with this stuff?  And how does she know how to spell "Steve"??
