Food Storage Extravaganza

We can turn just about anything into a party. Last Saturday we got together with a bunch of friends to update each other's family home food storage supply. We reserved a canner from the LDS Home Storage Center in our area. We purchased all kinds of essential foods in bulk (wheat, rice, beans, pasta, oats, sugar, flour and milk) and a bunch of #10 cans and got to work. It was great fun! Even the kids had a good time. I think when it was all said and done we sealed about 250 cans. Here are a few pictures to document the occasion:

Lucie's job was to put the oxy-pac into the can. She was very good at it!

She also liked to participate in quality control by sampling the apple slices.

The weather was so nice, that we took the flour and sugar outside
to cut-down on the mess in the kitchen.

The Lady liked using her artistic abilities to label the cans.

Thank goodness we had some big strong boys on hand for the heavy lifting!

The teenage boys liked running the canning machine the best!

Some of the finished product--the boys put their architectural skills to use!

Our one day extravaganza turned into a weekend affair. We ended up with 67 fewer metal lids than cans. So we had to wait until yesterday to pick-up some more lids and finish our project. But all in all I'd say it was quite successful. Thanks everyone for your cooperation, patience, and help. Pat yourselves on the back for a job well done!
