What's in a name?

Just a little follow-up on my "name" post. The Chinese put a lot of thought and effort into the names that they give their children. They usually give them names that describe masculine or feminine qualities. For example, boys are often given names that have to do with strength or courage. Girls are often given names associated with beauty or flowers. In Chinese the surname goes first and the given name follows. For example, John Smith in Western cultures would be known as Smith John in China. Chinese orphans are usually named by the Social Welfare Institute, unless a note with a name is left with the baby. Typically the first name would be the same for all of the children in the SWI or all the children who entered the SWI during a given year.

I looked up the meaning of "Lucie" on-line. It comes from the Latin and means "light". The first character above is the Chinese character for light. The second character is a translation based on the English pronunciaton of the word Lucie.
