Last night was the District Science Fair (Elementary School Division) held at the high school. There were 260 participants-120 of them received awards and 60 of those were selected to represent their schools at the Regional Science Fair. Bman was asked to set-up his board at 4:00. The judges reviewed all of the projects from 4:30-6:30. The kids were required to return to the display area at 6:30 (no parents allowed) for interviews. Then they opened the displays to the public from 8:00-8:45. Bman had three interviews. He said the first one was only so-so but the last two were great! We all went over to be with him at 8:00. We meandered through the projects--there were some really neat ones. At 8:45 the awards ceremony began. They called up about 15 kids at a time to receive their medals and their certificates. They announced the first 60 finalists. Then they announced the 60 kids that would be moving on to Regionals. I thought Bman was going to come out of his skin. He was one of the very last names called. A look of relief swept over him as he heard his name. All of the kids that were there from his school class were chosen to move on (pretty impressive!). The Regional Fair will be held at the end of the March at the local university. The kids get to miss an entire day of school. They have lots of fun projects for them to do. They will set-up their boards and go through the interview process again. The winners of the Regional contest receive cash awards as well as trophies. I think they choose only one child to go on to the National Fair. It's really fun. Bman can't wait. I think he's caught the science bug!
